Addictions Counselor Certification for Canada and The United States

If you have thought about getting certified and trained as an Addictions Counselor, this is the training program you will need.  Our 455-hour Addictions Counselor Certification Program with or without the Practicum Component (contact us to see if this is needed)  will prepare you to have a great rewarding career as an Addictions Counselor.  A Certification in Alcohol and Drug Counseling or Substance Use Disorder is a career that is in high demand due to the increasing opioid epidemic and the lack of qualified professionals to assist with the current crisis.

As a Certified Addictions Counselor or Certified Substance Abuse Counselor, you will be at the forefront of helping others with their drug and alcohol addictions. Once enrolled in our program, you will receive the 455 hours of online self-study education necessary to understand how to counsel clients with addictions in all of the 9 required domains.

We are accredited by NAADAC (USA) and the CACCF (Canada) so any of the 47 IC&RC boards you want to sit for will accept our training. These are private nonprofit boards that are NOT required in most places, but job requirements may differ depending on where you live. Our admissions team can walk you through the process of what you need to get your career off the ground.

There are differences between the MCAP, CAP, ICADC, LCDC, and more when looking for credentials and educational levels. Most require a minimum of high school education; some may require more. Our program is completely self-study, and you can go at your own pace. All materials, books and exams are included in the price. We have NO hidden fees.

Our 455-hour Core Course Program contains the following training hours:

  1. ICAM100: Understanding Addiction/Treatment Knowledge (an overview) 80 hours
  2. ICAM 101: Documentation: 15 hours
  3. ICAM 102: Counseling Theories and Techniques: Individual and Group: 80 hours
  4. ICAM103: Application to Practice/Professional and Personal Growth: 50 hours
  5. ICAM 104: Treatment Planning and Special Populations: 30 hours
  6. ICAM 105: Clinical Evaluation: 35 hours
  7. ICAM 106: Client, Family and Community Education (includes Domestic Violence, Cultural Diversity Requirements): 50 hours
  8. ICAM 107: Ethical, Legal, and Professional Responsibilities: 45 hours
  9. ICAM 108: Telehealth 15 hours
  10. ICAM 109: Case Management and Referral: 45 hours

Practicum is additional since it is only required in a few states. ICAM 200 and ICAM 201.

What degree do I need to be an addictions counselor? The minimum is a high school education diploma that is required by certain states or Providences. Some states have started requiring that you have a bachelor’s degree, however, this is to sign off on paperwork and bill insurance, you will need to check with the specific location.

Can I make money as an addiction counselor? Yes. Pay rates vary from job employment at a drug rehab to private practice. It depends on the degree, location, and workload. You can always go into private practice as well.

Do I need to be licensed as an addiction counselor? No, not in all areas. Some states like NJ, Colorado, Utah, and NY require that you obtain a license, other states like Florida and countries like Canada, United Kingdom, and some EU have a voluntary, nonaccredited certification board that you can opt to take the exam under, but you do not have to legally to practice.  Places like India and South America, Africa have no boards or governess.

How many educational hours do I need to sit for the addiction counselor exams? We provide 455 hours and most private nonprofit boards require 280 to 455. Please check with us if you are unsure of the requirments.
